The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has arrested two suspects for attempting to smuggle illicit drugs and Indian hemp to inmates at the Nomansland court complex in Kano.
The suspects are Usman Khalid, 25, and Bello Musa Ahmed, 24, both residents of the Tsamiya (Brigade) area of Kano State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa, confirmed the arrest in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
Kofar-Nassarawa said the suspects were apprehended by NCoS officers attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse, Kano, while attempting to throw Indian hemp and other illicit substances to inmates at the court premises.
“The suspects were arrested by NCoS officials attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse, Kano, while trying to throw Indian Hemp to inmates at the court premises,” he said.
He warned members of the public against intermingling with inmates, especially during transportation to and from court, noting that such actions constitute a serious security breach and are punishable by law.
“The NCoS is committed to rehabilitating and reforming inmates, and will not tolerate attempts to undermine this mandate,” the statement said.
According to him, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, has directed the Legal Unit and Intelligence Unit to hand over the suspects and the seized substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.
The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining maximum security and a zero-tolerance stance on drug-related activities within custodial facilities and court premises in the state, while urging the public to cooperate with security agencies to sustain law and order.
