The Kano State Police Command has impounded 104 motorcycles and 68 tricycles for violating the ban on commercial motorcycle operations and the restriction placed on tricycles within the Kano metropolis.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Kano.
Kiyawa said the enforcement exercise was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies between Jan. 1 and Jan. 7, 2026.
“From 1st to 7th January 2026, a total of 104 commercial motorcycles and 68 tricycles were impounded for violating the ban and restriction,” he said.
He added that 172 suspects were arrested in connection with the violations and had been charged to court for prosecution.
According to him, the operation was aimed at enforcing the ban on passenger conveyance on motorcycles for commercial purposes, popularly known as Achaba or Okada, as well as the restriction of tricycles from operating between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. within the state metropolis.
Kiyawa said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, appreciated the support and understanding of residents of the state.
“The Commissioner of Police appreciates the support and understanding of the good people of the state and commends the combined security agencies, including the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), for their efforts in enforcing the ban and restriction,” he stated.
The police spokesman said the ban and restriction remained in force and urged members of the public to comply with the regulations.
He listed the affected local government areas to include Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido Area), and Dawakin Kudu, covering Tamburawa, Gurjiya and Jido wards.
Kiyawa also encouraged members of the public to report violations or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575 and 09029292926.
“The Kano State Police Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring public safety and security in the state and will continue to take necessary measures to enforce the ban and restriction,” he added.
