There was a heavy deployment of security operatives at the Kano State Government House on Monday following reports of a planned defection by Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, Daily Trust reports.
Combined security personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were stationed at the main entrance and other strategic locations within the Government House.
Although the alleged defection has not been officially confirmed, political observers believe the governor may be considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A correspondent who monitored the situation observed no fewer than seven Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) belonging to the police and the DSS positioned at key points, including the main gate and the roundabout leading to the Government House.
Security checks were also tightened, with access to the premises subjected to strict identification procedures.
A senior security officer at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deployment was a precautionary measure.
“We are here to ensure law and order and prevent any breakdown of peace,” the officer said.
Another source within the Government House, also speaking anonymously, described the situation as “routine security preparedness,” adding that “there is no cause for panic.”
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the state government and security agencies were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
