The Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) has condemned the killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi area of Kano State, describing the incident as brutal and disturbing.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, the organisation said the killing was a grave violation of human life, particularly the lives of women and children.
YOSPIS said the incident had shocked the public conscience and highlighted what it described as a growing wave of violence in society.
“The brutal and senseless killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi is horrific, barbaric and deeply disturbing,” the statement read.
The organisation expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said it stood in solidarity with residents of Kano State over the incident.
YOSPIS commended the Kano State Police Command for the arrest of suspects in connection with the crime, while calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
“We commend the Kano Police Command for the swift arrest of the suspects involved. We call for a thorough, transparent and expedited investigation and demand that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law,” the statement said.
The group stressed that justice must be served to restore public confidence and deter similar crimes.
YOSPIS also linked violent crimes to drug abuse, saying evidence from communities across Kano State showed a strong connection between substance abuse and serious offences.
“Evidence from communities across Kano State consistently shows a strong link between drug abuse and heinous crimes, including murder, domestic violence and other forms of social vices,” it said.
According to the organisation, drug abuse erodes moral judgement, fuels aggression and destroys families and communities.
YOSPIS called on the Kano State Government, security agencies, community and religious leaders, parents and civil society organisations to strengthen efforts against drug abuse through prevention, rehabilitation and community-based interventions.
“Violence against women and children must never be tolerated. Justice must prevail, and decisive action against drug abuse must be sustained to prevent further tragedies,” the statement added.
