The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it received 3,019 complaints in Kano State between January and December 2025, with domestic violence and child rights violations topping the list.
The NHRC State Coordinator, Shehu Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.
Abdullahi said, “Out of the 3,019 cases received, 2,276 have been completed, while 743 are still ongoing.” He added that most complaints involved child abandonment, violations of child rights, domestic violence, the right to life, as well as cultural, economic, and social rights issues.
He further noted that other complaints were related to law enforcement abuses, sexual and gender-based violence, and neglect of parental responsibilities.
The coordinator also highlighted that in 2025, the commission conducted a data collection exercise across communities in the state to assess security concerns and the influx of migrants. The exercise recorded more than 2,000 persons from different countries and states, including asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing within Kano State.
Abdullahi assured that the NHRC would continue to create awareness and carry out sensitisation campaigns through media outlets, particularly in rural areas and among traditional rulers. He said the commission would also organise town hall meetings to raise security consciousness.
He added that NHRC plans to strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies, to promote and protect human rights in the state.
