The Coalition of Northern Groups Students’ Wing (CNG-SW), Kano State Chapter, has urged Nigerian students to embrace discipline, positive values and national unity to curb campus social vices.
The appeal was made on Monday at a one-day public lecture organised at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, Kano State.
The lecture focused on responsible student leadership, addressing drug abuse, thuggery, hate speech and campus disunity through positive values and mentorship.
CNG-SW National Coordinator, Mr Jamilu Aliyu-Chiranchi, said the programme was part of a national assignment to shape youths’ mindset and values.
He said campuses were not only academic centres, but platforms for grooming future leaders, including policymakers, judges and security operatives.
Aliyu-Chiranchi warned that drug abuse, hate speech and disunity posed serious dangers, urging enlightenment, mentorship and value reorientation.
“Nigerian students have historically played key roles in the struggle for democracy and must continue to uphold unity and national interest.
“Nigerian students should understand that we have no other country than Nigeria,” he said.
He urged students to reject ethnic and religious politics, and embrace leadership based on competence, integrity, capacity and proven service.
Aliyu-Chiranchi encouraged responsible political participation, noting that Nigeria’s democracy was largely achieved through student activism and sacrifice.
Chairman of the occasion, Dr Salisu Muhammad, commended the organisers, describing the lecture as timely and critical to youth development.
“Discipline is the cornerstone of personal and societal progress,” Muhammad said, warning that indiscipline and drug abuse were eroding societal values.
He called for mentorship and collective action to protect youths, restore leadership ideals and secure a united, progressive and just society.
