Former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Lawal Daura, has said he is not pursuing politics for financial gain but to save lives and rescue Katsina State from the grips of insecurity.
Daura made the statement on Thursday during a reunion of the Government College Funtua Old Boys Association (FOBA), Class of 1969, where he received renewed support for his 2027 gubernatorial ambition.
The ex-SSS boss described himself as a “politics mechanic,” explaining that his involvement in politics is aimed at fixing the state’s security challenges.
“Many people have called me to verify when they heard my short interview where I called myself a politics mechanic,” he said.
“Whenever you see a mechanic with his instruments, you know there is a problem. Really, there is a problem in our dear state, and that has been affecting all of us.
“People are talking about security every time because it is the key to open where the keys of other problems are. If you didn’t get that key, you cannot have access to the keys to address other problems.”
Daura lamented that several markets in the state that used to operate at night have now become inactive even during daytime due to insecurity.
He noted that farming, the mainstay of Katsina and neighbouring states, has also suffered major setbacks as a result of persistent insecurity.
“That is why we joined politics. It is not about leadership, because the position I held was bigger than that of a governor.
“I have made names even beyond the country. If it is the issue of money, what do I do with money now?”
Daura stressed that his motivation is to rescue the state and protect citizens from human rights abuses, which he said occur “in homes, on the road and everywhere.”
“You hear things like a tale, but it is true, they are happening,” he added.
He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their early support, pledging to work hard and succeed with Allah’s help.
The FOBA Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Yahaya, said Daura’s experience in security matters positions him to tackle the state’s insecurity challenge within a short time if elected.
Yahaya further pledged that each member of the association would deliver hundreds of votes for Daura, should he secure the gubernatorial ticket of any political party.
