Rano Local Government Area of Kano State was on Sunday thrown into mourning as the remains of Malam Nafi’u Ibrahim Umar, a veteran educationist and former staff member of the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board (SSSMB), were laid to rest at the Findi Cemetery.
Malam Nafi’u Umar, who served the state’s education sector in various capacities, including as a Senior Master and Principal, died at a Kano hospital after a protracted battle with cancer.
The burial ceremony attracted a large gathering of mourners, including former colleagues, students, community leaders, and family members, who described him as a dedicated teacher and a significant figure in the education sector.
The deceased is survived by three wives and 22 children.
Some of his former students told Kano Times that he was a disciplinarian and a mentor whose influence shaped their academic and personal lives.
One of his former students, Muhammad Ibrahim, said, “Malam Nafi’u Umar was not just a teacher; he was a father to many of us. He disciplined us, guided us, and pushed us to succeed. His death is a great loss to the education sector.”
Another student, Isyaku Ilah Ahmad, said, “He was strict but fair. He always insisted that we should be hardworking and truthful. I still remember his words: ‘Education is the key to a better life.’ We will forever cherish his lessons.”
Sani Muhammad, another former student, added, “Whenever we were confused, Malam Nafi’u would always be there to advise us. He made sure we understood our lessons and our responsibilities. Rano has lost a great educator.”
Colleagues described the deceased as a hardworking and disciplined officer who served the state with dedication.
His death has created a void in Rano’s education sector, particularly among those who benefited from his mentorship.
During the funeral prayers at the Findi Cemetery, mourners prayed for the repose of his soul and for strength for the family he left behind.
