Suspected gunmen on Monday night invaded Tiga town in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, killing a prominent businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago.
The attackers were also said to have carted away valuables during the deadly operation, further raising concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the state.
According to reports, the gunmen stormed the community under the cover of darkness and shot the victim inside his shop before looting goods and fleeing the scene.
The incident was disclosed in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday by a security commentator, DanKatsina50, who described the killing as another indication of the growing insecurity in the region.
“Last night, gunmen invaded Tiga town in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. During the attack, they killed a well-known community businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago, inside his shop and carted away valuables before escaping,” the statement read.
The attack reportedly threw residents of the town into panic, with many expressing fears over what they described as the increasing vulnerability of rural and semi-urban communities to violent attacks.
The killing has also reignited public debate over the rising cases of violent crime in the North-West and the effectiveness of existing security measures.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, residents have called on security agencies to urgently deploy more personnel to the area and intensify patrols to prevent further attacks.
Community leaders in Bebeji Local Government Area described the late Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago as a peaceful and hardworking businessman, noting that his death is a huge loss to the community.
The incident adds to a series of violent attacks linked to criminal elements across northern Nigeria, where gunmen have continued to carry out killings, kidnappings and other criminal activities in recent years.
