The Kwankwasiyya Movement has condemned calls for the resignation of the Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, describing them as provocative, ungrateful, and unacceptable.
The movement’s position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Saleh Mailemo, in response to reports that the Kano State Government, through the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, asked the deputy governor to step down from office.
Kwankwasiyya said it received the report “with deep concern,” noting that such a call was unwarranted and capable of threatening democratic peace and political tolerance in the state.
“This call is unwarranted, provocative, and deeply unfortunate. It reinforces the growing suspicion among the people of Kano State that the present government is unwilling to sustain democratic peace, internal harmony, and political tolerance,” the statement said.
The movement accused the government of attempting to sideline and humiliate loyal supporters of its national leader, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, who, it said, played a critical role in the emergence of the current administration.
According to Kwankwasiyya, the deputy governor was elected on a joint ticket and cannot be forced out of office at the whims of individuals within the government.
“The audacity of a non-Kwankwasiyya member, smuggled into the government, calling for the resignation of a deputy governor elected on a joint ticket is not only irritating but outright insulting,” the group stated.
It described the development as a display of political ingratitude, insisting that the victories recorded in the 2019 and 2023 elections were the result of the sacrifices and mobilization of Kwankwasiyya members across the state.
“If this government possessed any sense of political decorum, it would reflect deeply on the events of 2019 and 2023, when Jagora Kwankwaso and millions of Kwankwasiyya supporters fought relentlessly to secure the victory that brought Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo to Government House,” the statement added.
Kwankwasiyya also criticized the moral argument allegedly advanced by the commissioner, saying it was misplaced.
“We are particularly dismayed by the Commissioner’s attempt to assume moral superiority by declaring that he would resign if he were in the Deputy Governor’s position,” it said.
The movement argued that if such logic were to apply, it should extend to all officeholders who did not contribute to the government’s electoral victory.
It further warned that legal advisers within the administration should have reminded the government of the constitutional position of a deputy governor elected on a joint ticket.
“It is equally disappointing that legal minds within this administration have failed to remind the government of the constitutional and political authority of a deputy governor whose mandate is derived directly from the people and the constitution,” Kwankwasiyya stated.
The group insisted that the Kano State Government is a product of Kwankwasiyya’s struggle and must not be “hijacked by political adversaries and ungrateful elements.”
“Kwankwasiyya will not remain silent in the face of betrayal, intimidation, or the systematic humiliation of its loyal members,” the statement warned.
