The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has yet to formalize his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) months after initial discussions with the party, sources say.
According to a report by Punch, insiders within the Kwankwasiya Movement, the former Kano governor’s political network, told Kano Times that Kwankwaso’s decision hinges on assurances that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi will secure the ADC presidential ticket.
A proposed alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi for a joint 2027 presidential ticket under the ADC is reportedly being brokered by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Sources said a three-man ADC committee, set up to engage with political leaders considering joining the party, recently met with a committee appointed by Kwankwaso in Abuja. While the discussions were described as constructive, no final decision was reached.
A top ADC official told newsmen that both committees would reconvene soon to “reach a strong conclusion.”
“We are closing in on Kwankwaso and look forward to welcoming him. Our committee met his a few days ago, and they will meet again next week to take, hopefully, a strong decision,” the official said, adding that some issues remain unresolved.
A Kwankwaso loyalist confirmed the meetings but said the former governor might not defect “anytime soon.” The source added that northern political leaders, alongside Obasanjo, had advised caution until Obi’s presidential candidacy within the ADC is secure.
“Many factors are at play. Kwankwaso is a key bargaining figure for Peter Obi in securing the ADC presidential ticket. The timing of any move must be carefully considered,” the insider said.
The source noted that ADC leaders are pressuring Kwankwaso to join the party, but the ex-Kano governor’s camp is wary of political maneuvers that could undermine Obi’s chances. Consultations with national leaders are ongoing to gauge support for Obi’s presidential bid.
“We are committed to seeing the South complete its eight-year tenure, which can only be possible with Peter Obi as president. Until these consultations are concluded, no serious political action will be taken,” the source added.
Both Kwankwaso and ADC committees are expected to meet again next week to determine the way forward, the insider said.
When contacted, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi declined comment, stating he was not part of the committee engaging Kwankwaso. Similarly, NNPP spokesperson Ladipo Johnson said he had no information on the matter.
