Women journalists from various media organisations in Kano State have been trained on modern journalism practices at a capacity-building workshop organised by the Aminu Garba Magashi Foundation.
The training, aimed at enhancing professionalism, skills development and ethical journalism among female media practitioners, was disclosed in a statement signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, Comrade Aisha Muhammad Yanleman.
According to the statement, the workshop brought together women journalists from across the state to strengthen their capacity in line with the evolving media landscape.
It said the programme featured experienced facilitators and resource persons, including Comrade Uba Abdullahi, Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu, Comrade Aliyu Yusuf and the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Murtala Adewale, who delivered lectures on contemporary journalism practices, media ethics and professional development.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, represented by Comrade Mustafa Muhammad Gambo, described the workshop as timely.
Dederi said the training was highly relevant, especially at a time when the media environment is rapidly changing and requires continuous capacity enhancement.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Bahijja Malam Kabara, called on non-governmental organisations, development partners and philanthropists to support initiatives aimed at training women journalists.
She said such interventions were crucial to producing competent, confident and responsible female journalists in Kano State.
Kabara also urged members of the association to actively participate in workshops, seminars and other professional programmes to strengthen the association and improve their professional competence.
The statement added that she expressed appreciation to the Aminu Garba Magashi Foundation for providing what she described as a giant opportunity for women journalists in the state.
Also speaking, the Secretary of NAWOJ, Kano State Chapter, Comrade Maryam Muhammad Yakasai, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to initiating and collaborating on programmes that would further enhance the professional development of women journalists.
Some participants, including Aisha J. Ahmad and Halima Wada Sinkin, commended the Aminu Garba Magashi Foundation for the initiative and pledged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve their professional practice.
