The National Examinations Council, NECO, has uncovered cases of whole-centre examination malpractice in three states during the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE.
The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja while announcing the release of the results.
According to him, the council has recommended the derecognition of the affected examination centres.
Prof. Wushishi explained that the centres were located in three northern states, with two in Niger State, one in Kano State and one in Yobe State.
He further revealed that five supervisors were recommended for blacklisting over their alleged roles in aiding and abetting examination malpractice. The supervisors include two from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and one each from Kano, Adamawa and Ondo states.
The NECO boss said the 2025 internal SSCE was conducted from Monday, June 16, 2025, to Friday, July 25, 2025.
On candidates’ statistics, Prof. Wushishi stated that a total of 97,979 candidates registered for the examination, comprising 51,823 males, representing 52.92 per cent, and 45,156 females, representing 46.63 per cent.
Out of this number, he said 95,160 candidates sat for the examination, including 50,785 males, accounting for 53.36 per cent, and 44,375 females, representing 46.63 per cent.
Speaking on performance, the registrar disclosed that 73,167 candidates, representing 78.32 per cent, scored five credits and above, including English Language, out of 93,425 candidates who sat for the paper.
In Mathematics, he said 85,256 candidates, representing 91.35 per cent, scored five credits and above out of 93,330 candidates.
He added that 82,082 candidates, representing 86.26 per cent, obtained five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics, while 68,166 candidates, representing 71.63 per cent, scored five credits and above in both English and Mathematics.
Kano Times reported that the 2024 SSCE recorded 60.55 per cent of candidates who secured five credits and above in English Language and Mathematics.
“The examination was conducted for candidates seeking to acquire the requisite qualifications for admission into universities and other higher institutions, both locally and abroad.
“It presents a second chance or opportunity for candidates to make up for their deficiencies,” Wushishi said.
