Kano State former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Turakin Rano), has expressed deep sympathy to traders affected by the devastating fire that engulfed Singa Market over the weekend, destroying millions of naira worth of goods.
Rurum, who represents Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, said in a statement made available to newsmen in Kano on Sunday that he was deeply saddened by the incident.
“It is truly heartbreaking to see hardworking traders lose their investments in such a tragic fire,” Rurum said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to all victims and their families. I pray for God’s comfort and protection as they navigate this challenging period.”
He also urged relevant authorities to take urgent measures to prevent future fire outbreaks in the market. “We must work together to ensure the safety of our markets. Fire incidents like this not only destroy livelihoods but also affect the overall economy of our communities,” he added.
The former Speaker commended the efforts of emergency responders who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and called on government at all levels to provide immediate relief and support to the affected traders.
Rurum also appealed to the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and provide additional support to the victims, stressing that federal assistance would help accelerate relief efforts and reconstruction of the market.
He reiterated his call on the state government, led by Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to intervene promptly, noting that timely support from both state and federal authorities would help traders recover and rebuild their businesses.
Singa Market, one of the busiest in Kano, reportedly suffered extensive losses after the fire broke out on Saturday afternoon, with traders lamenting the destruction of goods, stalls, and personal property.
