Gov. Yusuf seeks FG’s intervention in Singer Market fire

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Saturday appealed to the Federal Government to urgently provide modern firefighting equipment, including air support, following a second fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano metropolis.

Governor Yusuf made the call upon arriving at the Gidan Gilas section of the market while the fire was still raging, destroying shops and property. This was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

“Governor Yusuf called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene by providing modern firefighting equipment, including air support and other essential tools, to help contain the fire and prevent future occurrences,” the statement partly read.

The governor noted that such intervention would strengthen the capacity of fire services to respond effectively to emergencies in major commercial centres across the country.

“This intervention will go a long way in enhancing the operational capacity of our fire services and minimising the scale of destruction during such unfortunate incidents,” he added.

He commended the efforts of the Kano State Fire Service and other security agencies for their commitment to battling the inferno.

Governor Yusuf also urged traders and residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders as efforts continued to bring the situation under control.

“We appeal to traders and residents to remain calm and support the emergency teams as they work tirelessly to extinguish the fire and safeguard lives and property,” the statement added.

Kano Times reports that Singer Market is one of Kano’s major commercial hubs, and this marks the second fire outbreak at the facility.
