President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy for traders and residents of Kano State following the devastating fire at Singer Market, describing the incident as tragic and directing a comprehensive investigation into its causes.
In a statement on Sunday, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President contacted Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to receive a situation report. The latest fire occurred less than two weeks after a similar blaze hit the market.
“President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with traders and the people of Kano State over the devastating fire outbreak at Kano’s Singer Market over the weekend. The fire, which started on Saturday evening, raged into Sunday morning, causing significant damage to the food market. The President described the incident as tragic,” the statement read.
The President also directed authorities to investigate the persistent market fires.
“President Tinubu has directed a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the market fires, which often leave traders in despair,” the statement added.
The fire destroyed properties worth over N5 billion and affected more than 1,000 businesses, according to Singer Market Chairman Junaid Zakari, who described it as one of the worst tragedies in the market’s history.
“Seven persons have been declared missing as of Sunday, with emergency responders working to determine their whereabouts,” Zakari said.
