The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 33 people were killed following an attack by suspected bandits on Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Birnin Kebbi. He said the attack occurred on Wednesday when armed men, believed to be Lakurawa militants, invaded the district to rustle cattle.
Preliminary investigations indicated the assailants likely crossed into the area from Gudu Local Government Area in Sokoto State.
“During the attack, residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilised in response to the invasion. In the ensuing confrontation, 33 persons lost their lives,” Usman said.
He added that the police, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, have reinforced security in the affected communities. Additional personnel and operational assets have been deployed, while sustained patrols continue to restore normalcy and prevent further attacks.
The police spokesman extended condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Arewa community. He also urged residents to report suspicious activities through established security channels and warned against confronting armed criminals directly.
“Incidents involving heavily armed criminal elements require coordinated security intervention. Members of the public are advised not to engage armed criminals directly, as such actions pose grave risks to lives and property,” he cautioned.
SP Usman noted that targeted operations are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and strengthen early warning mechanisms in vulnerable communities across the state.
The attack comes amid growing security concerns in Kebbi and neighbouring states, where armed groups have carried out deadly raids, kidnappings, and extortion in rural areas.
