Kano State Police Command on Thursday announced movement restrictions in Kano Municipal and Ungogo Local Government Areas ahead of the February 21, 2026, State Assembly by-elections.
The announcement followed a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), chaired by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano, Zango Abdu, held on February 19.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command said ICCES “met today, 19th February 2026 and concluded security arrangements ahead of the upcoming by-elections in Kano Municipal and Ungogo LGAs State Constituencies, slated for February 21, 2026.”
The Co-Chair of ICCES and Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, informed residents that the command, “in collaboration with other security agencies, has put all necessary measures in place to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, credible, transparent, and successful by-elections for Kano Municipal and Ungogo State Constituencies.”
The statement directed that “movement of motor vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles is strictly restricted from 12:00 am midnight to 6:00 pm on Saturday, 21st February 2026, being the Election Day, proper.”
It added that “exceptions will only be granted to vehicles on essential services, such as ambulances, fire service trucks, and vehicles of electoral officers and accredited election observers.”
According to the command, “only eligible voters will be allowed at polling units,” while “only agents officially identified by INEC will be permitted at polling units.”
The police further warned that “the carrying of weapons of any kind is strictly prohibited” and that “individuals wearing clothing or carrying items with political party logos or identities will not be allowed at polling units.”
The statement noted that “loitering in or around polling units will not be tolerated” and that “state security outfits such as Vigilante Groups, Neighbourhood Watch, Hisbah, KAROTA personnel, etc. will not be allowed at polling units.”
The command assured that security agencies “will continue to remain apolitical, impartial, professional, neutral, and civil in the discharge of their duties,” urging residents and visitors to “cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure a smooth and hitch-free electoral process.”
It wished the people of Kano State “a peaceful and successful by-election” and encouraged members of the public to report emergencies or suspicious activities through designated police lines.
