The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunny weather across northern Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday, with isolated thunderstorms expected in some areas, the agency said on Saturday.
According to NiMet, the northern region will experience sunshine throughout the forecast period, while the North-central region will see sunny skies with occasional clouds.
“Isolated thunderstorms, with or without rain, are expected over parts of Kogi, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Kwara states during the day,” the agency said.
In the southern region, cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine are anticipated, with light rain over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Delta, and Cross River states in the morning.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected across Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states,” NiMet added.
For Monday, NiMet said sunny skies would prevail over northern Nigeria, with isolated thunderstorms in southern Taraba State.
“The North-central region will have sunny skies with patches of clouds, and chances of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms over parts of Kogi and Nasarawa states in the morning. Later, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over Benue State,” the agency noted.
The southern region is expected to remain cloudy with occasional sunshine. “Morning light rain is likely over Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Edo, and Cross River states. In the afternoon, thunderstorms with moderate rain may affect Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Delta states,” NiMet said.
On Tuesday, northern Nigeria will continue to enjoy sunny weather, while the North-central region will experience sunshine with cloud patches in the morning and isolated thunderstorms over the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Niger states later in the day.
The southern region will have cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine and light morning rains, followed by moderate thunderstorms in Ondo, Edo, Imo, Bayelsa, and Delta states.
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged the public to take precautions.
“Ensure loose objects are secured, avoid driving under heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees. Temperatures are expected to remain high; wear breathable clothing, stay hydrated, and remain in well-ventilated areas. Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning,” the agency advised.
