The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Sunday visited Kano, where he met with a former governor of the state, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The meeting, held at Kwankwaso’s residence on Miller Road, was attended by Governor Seyi Makinde, Senator Seriake Dickson, activist Naajatu Mohammed, and other prominent figures.
The visit has sparked speculation about possible political realignment, with reports suggesting that Kwankwaso may be considering a move from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the African Democratic Congress.
Speaking during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah celebration, Obi said his visit was mainly to celebrate the festive period and honour Kwankwaso, while reiterating his commitment to reviving Kano’s economic strength.
“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader. So thank you,” Obi said.
He added, “We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. What we want to do is bring back the power of Kano — all those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2, Bank of the North — we want to bring all of them back. Today is not politics; it is the celebration of Sallah.”
Kwankwaso, who hosted the gathering, welcomed the dignitaries and expressed delight over the show of unity during the Sallah celebration.
