A former presidential spokesman, Bashir Ahmad, has said the exit of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria People’s Party may affect the electoral fortunes of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently resigned from the party with immediate effect.
The development was contained in a statement dated March 29, 2026, and signed by Kwankwaso, which he shared on his official X page.
Reacting, Ahmad, in a post on his X handle, said the defection could impact the ruling party’s performance in the state.
He, however, noted that the situation was not beyond control if the party remained united.
“Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s defection to the other side may have an impact on our overall performance in Kano. However, this is not insurmountable,” he wrote.
“As long as we keep our house intact and put our affairs in proper order, victory is still very much within our reach.”
Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to influence political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
