The Federal Government College Kano Old Students Association (FGCKOSA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what it describes as a “deeply troubling development” involving the proposed concession of about 30 hectares of the school’s land under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
In a statement signed by Shoyinka Shodunke, President of FGCKOSA, the alumni body expressed concern that the initiative could undermine the integrity and legacy of the national institution.
“Unity Schools were established as symbols of excellence, integration, and nation-building. Any action that diminishes their integrity reflects a troubling disregard for the power of education as a driver of national progress,” the statement said.
FGCKOSA warned that the proposed development, described as a residential and commercial real estate project, threatens student safety, reduces the school’s capacity for future growth, and offers no tangible benefit to the institution.
“The land identified for this project includes critical open spaces necessary for recreation, expansion, and future development. Any project that reduces the capacity of the school to grow cannot, in any form, be considered beneficial to the institution,” the statement added.
The alumni also highlighted their long-standing commitment to the College, noting that they have invested billions of naira over the years in infrastructure, academic programs, and overall school development without seeking any portion of the land in return.
FGCKOSA has also established a dedicated foundation aiming to raise ₦5 billion at its official launch in June 2026 to support academic excellence.
The association further urged the federal government to cancel the proposed PPP arrangement, protect the integrity of Unity Schools nationwide, and ensure no action is taken that compromises the future of education in Nigeria.
“We strongly advise members of the public to refrain from purchasing or investing in any land or property associated with this scheme, as it is under serious dispute and may be overturned, exposing buyers to financial loss,” Shodunke said.
FGCKOSA concluded by vowing to pursue all legal avenues to overturn the proposed arrangement, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding the legacy of Federal Government College Kano for future generations.
