A fire outbreak has destroyed a female students’ hostel at the College of Health Technology in Jigawa State, affecting 52 students.
The blaze, reportedly caused by a cooking gas cylinder, consumed the hostel building and the personal belongings of the students.
The Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdullahi Muhammad Kainuwa, who visited the scene, confirmed that firefighters successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the campus.
Following the incident, the affected students have been granted a six-day break to allow for recovery and assessment of losses.
The Local Government Chairman, Malam Jamilu Muhammad Dan Malam, said arrangements have been made to transport the students to their respective homes. He added that the council is working with relevant agencies to provide support for those affected.
He further noted that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is expected to distribute relief materials, including clothing and mattresses, to cushion the impact of the fire.
No casualties were reported.
