The Jigawa State Government, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is making moves to bring former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mustapha Lamido, into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source close to the development disclosed that the state government is actively engaging Mustapha and his father, Sule Lamido, in a bid to secure their defection to the APC at what was described as a “critical period” in the country’s political landscape.
The move, Kano Times gathered, comes on the heels of recent resignations by some members of an APC faction in the state, a development said to have heightened efforts to strengthen the party’s base.
According to multiple sources, the APC-led government is reportedly offering Mustapha Lamido the position of deputy governor as part of a deal to lure him into the party.
A source familiar with the negotiations said, “The government is making serious overtures. One of the key offers on the table is the deputy governor slot, alongside other political concessions.”
Another insider hinted that the proposed arrangement may also include opportunities for senatorial and legislative tickets, as well as other political appointments for members of Lamido’s camp.
“There are broader discussions beyond just the deputy governorship. It involves possible slots for the Senate, House of Representatives, and other strategic positions,” the source added.
However, there has been no official response from Mustapha Lamido or his camp regarding the reported move.
An insider, however, revealed that a final decision may be imminent, pending a crucial meeting between Lamido and the state governor, expected to take place upon his return from official trips to China and Liberia.
“The meeting will be decisive. After that, his position will be made clear,” the source said.
Efforts to get official confirmation from the Jigawa State Government and APC leadership were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
