Electricity consumers in seven states — Plateau, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and Yobe — are set to experience weeks of power disruption following a scheduled outage on the Jos–Gombe 330kV transmission line.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the outage will run from April 9 to May 22, 2026.
According to the operator, the disruption will occur weekly from Thursday to Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
It explained that the outage is to enable the installation of Optical Ground Wire fibre optic infrastructure along the transmission corridor as part of efforts to modernise the national grid.
“The Nigerian Independent System Operator wishes to inform customers in the affected states of a scheduled outage on the Jos–Gombe 330kV transmission line from April 9 to May 22, 2026.
“This outage is necessary to facilitate the installation of Optical Ground Wire fibre optic infrastructure along the line,” the statement read.
The agency added that the upgrade would enhance grid operations through improved Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, SCADA, Energy Management Systems, EMS, and telecommunications capabilities.
Despite arrangements to maintain supply through available 132kV lines, the operator warned that consumers may experience reduced electricity during the outage period due to limited capacity.
“During the outage period, supply to the affected areas will be maintained through available 132kV transmission lines.
“However, customers may experience reduced power supply and service limitations,” it added.
The operator said it is working with relevant stakeholders, including Jos and Yola Electricity Distribution Companies, as well as the Transmission Company of Nigeria, to minimise the impact on consumers.
It, however, assured that the project would improve power supply in the long run through better monitoring, faster fault detection and enhanced grid stability.
The agency apologised for the inconvenience caused and appealed for understanding from affected consumers.
