The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Northwest University Kano branch, has urged the Kano State Government to implement the provisions of the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government, particularly the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Secretariat Assistance Allowance.
The union made the call in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mansur Sani, and Secretary, Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo, following its congress held on June 3, 2026.
ASUU said its members expressed concern over the delay in implementing the allowances approved under the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.
According to the union, implementation of the allowances was expected to begin in January 2026 but has yet to commence.
The statement read, “Despite expectations that implementation would commence in January 2026, no significant progress has been made despite several correspondences to the university administration and the Kano State Government.”
The union said the delay had affected workers and led to the accumulation of unpaid entitlements.
“The welfare of university staff remains central to the stability, productivity and growth of the university system. Delays in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily create hardship for staff and lead to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action,” the statement added.
ASUU called on the state government and other stakeholders to take steps to ensure the immediate implementation of the allowances.
“ASUU-NWU therefore calls on the Kano State Government and all relevant stakeholders to expedite action and ensure the immediate implementation of CATA and SAA,” the union said.
It added that fulfilling commitments made to university workers would help maintain industrial harmony in the institution.
While acknowledging ongoing engagements on staff welfare matters, the union urged those involved to intensify efforts towards resolving the issue.
“ASUU-NWU remains committed to constructive engagement and dialogue and expects that the necessary action will be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students, the university community and industrial harmony,” the statement stated.
