President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for expanding access to higher education through the successful implementation of the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme.
The commendation came during a meeting with the Chairman of NELFUND, Jim Ovia, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, in Abuja on Tuesday.
NELFUND disclosed this in a post shared on its official X handle on Wednesday.
According to the agency, Tinubu praised NELFUND for its efforts in widening access to tertiary education through the student loan initiative.
The President also commended Sawyerr for his leadership in driving the programme, noting that the scheme has enabled millions of Nigerian students to pursue higher education without the burden of financial constraints.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday received the Chairman of NELFUND, Mr Jim Ovia, alongside the Managing Director/Chief Executive of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, in Abuja.
“During the meeting, President Tinubu commended NELFUND for its remarkable strides in expanding access to higher education through the successful implementation of the Student Loan Scheme. The President also praised the leadership of the Managing Director/CEO, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, for driving the initiative and ensuring that millions of Nigerian students now have access to quality education without the burden of financial constraints,” the statement read.
NELFUND also revealed that it has disbursed over ₦303 billion in interest-free student loans to more than 1.64 million students across the country.
The Fund described the development as a significant milestone in advancing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education and youth development.
