The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautionary measures over potential security concerns in some locations.
ONSA made the call in a security advisory dated Aug. 27 and shared with security agencies.
The advisory said the alert followed ongoing military offensives, intelligence gathering and threat monitoring by Nigerian security agencies in collaboration with local and international partners.
It noted that security operations in recent months had recorded successes against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other criminal groups.
The advisory cited the killing of several terrorist and bandit commanders, including ISWAP commander Abubakar Mainok, also known as Abu Bilal Al-Minuki.
It said the operations had also disrupted terrorist camps, hideouts and other criminal strongholds across parts of the country.
“This advisory is issued against the backdrop of sustained operations by Nigerian security agencies across the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions, which have recorded notable successes against ISWAP and other criminal groups,” ONSA said.
According to the advisory, despite the losses suffered by the groups, terrorists may seek to carry out isolated attacks to create fear or attract attention.
“Citizens are encouraged to remain alert to unusual or suspicious persons, objects, vehicles, and movements within their environment,” it said.
ONSA urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
It also advised state and local government authorities to strengthen community vigilance, support preventive measures and ensure timely information sharing with security agencies.
The security adviser urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
It said the protection of lives and property remained a priority of the Federal Government, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies.
“The government will also continue to work closely with the international community through sustained intelligence sharing, security cooperation, and coordinated preventive measures to address evolving threats and strengthen collective security,” ONSA said.
