Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, Alhaji Garba Buba, and another resident.
The attackers reportedly invaded Rantan community on Sunday night and opened fire, killing Buba and Sulaiman Zunduma.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Buba was shot during the attack and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.
“Last night, Sunday, suspected kidnappers attacked our town, Rantan. During the attack, they shot Alhaji Garba Buba, the APC chairman of Rantan Ward, who later died in hospital from the injuries sustained,” he said.
The resident added that the gunmen also shot another resident, Alhaji Sa’adu.
“They also shot Alhaji Sa’adu and killed another person, Sulaiman Zunduma,” he said.
Confirming Buba’s death, a family member, Hafsat Garba Rantan, described him as her paternal uncle.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Gunmen have killed my paternal uncle,” she said.
The incident occurred hours after gunmen attacked Chiromawa community in Garun Malam Local Government Area of the state, abducting the Sarkin Noman Jihar Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa.
Five persons were reportedly shot and injured during the attack, which occurred at about 11 p.m. on Saturday.
The Chairman of Garun Malam LGA, Alhaji Aminu Salisu Kadawa, said the attackers stormed the community and headed for the residence of the Sarkin Noma.
“The gunmen invaded the community at about 11 p.m. on Saturday and headed to the residence of the Sarkin Noma, where they opened fire indiscriminately,” Kadawa said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Kiyawa, said three of the injured victims were identified as Yusif Nasiru, 20; Salisu Garba, 20; and Ibrahim Hassan, while two others also sustained injuries.
Kiyawa said tactical and patrol teams, reinforced by personnel from neighbouring divisions, were deployed after the police received a distress call.
“The police, in collaboration with members of the community, vigilantes and Neighbourhood Watch Corps, gave the hoodlums a hot chase,” he said.
He added that the attackers abandoned Nadabo and fled into the bushes.
“Consequently, the bandits abandoned the kidnapped victim and fled the scene. Alhaji Yusif Nadabo was rescued unhurt,” Kiyawa said.
The injured victims and the rescued Sarkin Noma were taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Kadawa said he led council officials to the hospital and stayed through the night to monitor the victims’ condition.
“The victims who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital,” he said.
