Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities, despite ongoing negotiations with the government over funding and welfare issues.
ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the industrial action at a press briefing at the University of Abuja, saying the strike would commence from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on September 28,” Piwuna said.
He added that all university branches of the union had been directed to withdraw their services immediately, describing the strike as “total and comprehensive.”
The move marks the latest standoff between the lecturers and the Federal Government, which has struggled for years to resolve disputes over salary arrears, university funding, and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement.
Last week, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa said the government was in the final stage of talks with ASUU and other unions to avert another shutdown of tertiary institutions.
He added that ₦50 billion had been released for Earned Academic Allowances, while ₦150 billion had been earmarked in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.
ASUU has staged several strikes in recent years over similar issues, disrupting academic calendars across Nigeria’s public universities.
