Bandits have abducted at least eight persons at Biresawa village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers invaded the community between 11 p.m. and midnight on Monday.
According to him, two males and six females were taken away, adding that there was no information yet on their whereabouts.
Another resident, Mr. Kabiru Usman, said the bandits gained access to the village through the nearby Tsundu community.
He said the attackers, who were armed, abducted his wife, his 17-year-old daughter, his brother’s wife and two other women.
“We tried to resist them but we were overpowered,” he said.
Usman added that residents had alerted security agencies after receiving information earlier in the day that the attackers were approaching.
Another source in Yan Chibi village said the assailants also invaded Sarmawa, Yan Chibi and Gano communities in Tsanyawa area.
He said about 50 armed men on motorcycles stormed Yan Chibi, shooting into the air before whisking away an unspecified number of persons, mostly women.
“So far, no life has been reported lost, but more than 10 persons have been abducted across the affected communities,” he said.
A member of the local vigilante group said residents had earlier reported sightings of suspicious persons in the area.
He said the vigilante team attempted to pursue the attackers after the abductions but lost track of them as they fled toward neighbouring Katsina State.
He added that many residents have been living in fear following recent attacks in Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas.
Several villages in the area have been deserted due to persistent insecurity, with residents relocating to Faruruwa town or urban centres.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, were unsuccessful as calls to his mobile phone were not answered.
The latest incident follows a similar attack on Yan Kwada village in Faruruwa community of Shanono Local Government Area, where five women, including nursing mothers, were abducted.
The attack occurred a week after a joint military operation reportedly killed 19 bandits during a confrontation in the area.
