The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday accused the Federal Government of sabotaging the fight against insurgency through what it described as secret negotiations with bandits behind recent mass abductions in parts of the country.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party welcomed the release of abducted worshippers in Kwara State and schoolchildren in Kebbi, but said the circumstances surrounding their freedom had raised concerns about the government’s handling of security matters.
Abdullahi said while the party was relieved that the victims had been reunited with their families, the incidents should not have occurred if the government was fully committed to its constitutional duty of protecting citizens.
The party also cited conflicting statements from top officials, including the Inspector General of Police and the Presidential spokesperson, saying the inconsistencies suggested a lack of transparency. It questioned whether ransom or other concessions were offered to secure the releases, warning that such actions would embolden criminal gangs and sustain what it called a “banditry economy.”
ADC noted that the return of armed groups to Isaac community in Kwara shortly after the release of abducted worshippers indicated that the government’s approach was failing to provide lasting security.
The party further criticised the closure of 47 Federal Unity Schools as a response to insecurity, describing the decision as a sign of weakness that could embolden violent groups. It called for urgent measures, including deploying NSCDC personnel to all Unity Schools to strengthen protection for students.
“The more we capitulate, the more ground we lose as a nation,” the statement said, urging the Federal Government to secure schools, ensure the return of all abducted children, and demonstrate that the country would not bow to terror.
