Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday attended plenary at the National Assembly of Nigeria, Abuja, where he witnessed the formal defection of eight members of the House of Representatives from the state to the All Progressives Congress.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the lawmakers defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.
“The defection was announced on the floor of the House during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas,” the statement said.
It added that in separate letters read during the session, the lawmakers attributed their decision to the lingering internal crisis within the NNPP.
“In separate letters read during the session, the lawmakers cited the internal crisis within the NNPP as the reason for their decision to defect,” the statement noted.
The plenary was attended by prominent political figures, including a former governor of the state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
Governor Yusuf, according to the statement, described the development as part of the democratic process, stressing that political realignments are not unusual in a vibrant democracy.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to governance, irrespective of political differences.
“He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Kano State, irrespective of political differences, and emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among elected representatives for the overall development of the state,” the statement added.
