EFCC Arrests Woman Over Alleged Naira Mutilation in Viral TikTok Video

The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, for allegedly mutilating a N500 Naira note.

According to a statement released by the commission on Wednesday, April 8, 2025, the suspect was apprehended following a viral video on TikTok in which she was seen cleaning mucus from her nose using the currency note.

EFCC operatives quickly traced Muhammed within the Maiduguri metropolis area and took her into custody on Tuesday, April 7, 2025.

She is currently under investigation at the Maiduguri detention facility, and the commission said she will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

The EFCC warned the public that mutilation of currency is a punishable offence under Nigerian law and urged citizens to respect the country’s currency.
