The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has approved the appointment of a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, as Garkuwan Kano.
The appointment, which takes effect from April 22, 2026, was conveyed in a letter signed by the Senior Councillor of the Kano Emirate, Aliyu Ibrahim Ahmed.
“I am pleased to inform you that His Highness, Sarkin Kano Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, PhD, CON, has approved your appointment to the office of Garkuwan Kano with effect from 22nd April, 2026,” the letter read.
While congratulating Mahmoud on the conferment, the Emirate Council expressed confidence in his capacity to contribute to the development of the emirate.
“While congratulating you on this well-deserved appointment, His Highness and Kano Emirate Council hope that you will use your wealth of experience to continue to contribute towards the development of Kano Emirate in particular, and the state in general,” the letter added.
The council also offered prayers for guidance, stating, “May Allah SWT continue to guide us on the right path, Ameen.”

Mahmoud, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was called to the rank in 2001. He served as President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Chancellor of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil.
He is also the founder of Dikko & Mahmoud Law Firm and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, United Kingdom.
The legal practitioner serves as a non-executive director on the boards of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and the Aliko Dangote Foundation.
Mahmoud is a recipient of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
