The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has said the Federal Government is considering measures to support Nigerian airlines, including Hajj carriers, amid the rising global cost of aviation fuel ahead of the 2026 Hajj exercise.
Yusuf disclosed this while speaking on preparations for the pilgrimage, noting that the commission is engaging stakeholders in the aviation sector to ensure smooth airlift operations.
According to him, discussions on operational logistics, especially aviation fuel, are part of routine pre-Hajj arrangements and are being handled through established channels.
The NAHCON chairman dismissed reports claiming that some contracted airlines were unwilling to participate in the Hajj operation due to high fuel costs.
He described the reports as false and speculative, insisting that they do not reflect the level of cooperation between the government and airline operators.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all necessary arrangements are progressing as planned, and the inaugural flight for the 2026 Hajj exercise is scheduled for May 3, 2026,” he said.
Yusuf explained that the Federal Government’s intervention is aimed at ensuring airlines do not operate at a loss while also shielding pilgrims from high airfare charges.
He added that all contracted Hajj carriers had reaffirmed their commitment to safety, efficiency and a hitch-free operation, even as consultations with regulators and other stakeholders continue.
Despite the current economic challenges, the NAHCON chairman expressed confidence that both outbound and return flights for the 2026 Hajj exercise would be conducted successfully.
He further reiterated the commission’s optimism that, with continued government support and proper coordination, Nigerian pilgrims would enjoy a smooth and successful Hajj exercise in 2026.
