The management of The Sun Newspaper has appointed veteran political journalist Fred Itua as its new Group Politics Editor.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, places Itua in charge of political coverage across the newspaper’s print and digital platforms.
The move has been described as a major editorial step, given The Sun’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading newspapers.
Itua is widely regarded for his years of political reporting across Nigeria’s democratic landscape, with coverage spanning the Federal Capital Territory and the 36 states.
In a statement announcing the appointment, the management of The Sun expressed confidence in his capacity to drive its political desk.
The newspaper said: “Fred Itua is not merely a journalist; he is an institution in himself. His appointment as Group Politics Editor is a reflection of our deep commitment to rigorous, balanced, and consequential political journalism at a time when the nation needs it most.”
Industry observers have also welcomed the development, describing Itua as a meticulous reporter with a strong reputation for accuracy and balanced political reporting.
As Group Politics Editor, he is expected to supervise political correspondents and guide the newspaper’s coverage of elections, governance, legislative affairs and policy issues.
He will also oversee political content strategy across The Sun’s online platforms and social media channels.
