Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, says no final decision has been taken on his political future or that of his associates.
Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), however, confirmed that consultations are ongoing with leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and other political stakeholders over the unfolding situation in the party.
He stated this in a post shared on his X handle on Saturday.
According to him, recent media reports suggesting a possible political realignment within the ADC were misleading.
“We have noted recent media reports and discussions suggesting a possible realignment within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to the current challenges facing the party.
“In light of the misleading narratives in the public domain, I wish to state categorically that no final decision has been taken regarding my political future or that of my political associates,” he said.
Kwankwaso said recent court rulings had further complicated the party’s situation, noting that while the Supreme Court affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC), it also referred parts of the matter back to the High Court.
“The recent Supreme Court judgment, while affirming the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC), also remitted the matter back to the High Court. This has left the party in a precarious position,” he stated.
He added that a separate Federal High Court ruling had also invalidated the party’s recent convention, while the Attorney General of the Federation had reportedly sought the deregistration of the ADC.
“In addition, the Federal High Court has recently ruled to delegitimise the party’s recent convention. The Attorney General of the Federation has also strangely applied to a Federal High Court to deregister the ADC,” Kwankwaso said.
The former governor said the situation mirrored previous legal challenges that affected his stay in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
“We left the NNPP due to externally influenced legal problems that made our stay perilous. The ADC has now been also forced into this difficulty,” he added.
Kwankwaso disclosed that consultations were ongoing with political actors on the way forward.
“Consequently, like other major stakeholders, we have commenced wide-ranging consultations — including with leaders from the NDC, PRP and others to explore the best options for protecting our democratic interests. We shall announce our decision in the soonest possible time,” he said.
On speculation about the 2027 presidential election, Kwankwaso said he had not declared interest nor endorsed any aspirant, adding that the ADC had yet to zone its presidential ticket.
He also clarified that his absence from recent party meetings was due to personal commitments, which he said were communicated to the leadership.
Kwankwaso maintained that any final position on his political direction would be formally communicated at the appropriate time.
