Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has addressed the common perception that many Nigerian politicians are motivated by financial gain while in office.
Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Dogara emphasized that several public officials would be willing to serve without compensation if public expectations were more reasonable.
“If we can cut the demands on some of these our government officials by 90 percent, I assure you that there are so many people there who are willing to work free of charge,” Dogara stated during the program.
He added, “But the situation is that you cannot put a lot of burden on my head and knock on my leg, which I am supposed to stand on in order to carry the burden.”
Dogara also mentioned that during a recent meeting between former National Assembly leaders and President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, they discussed the ongoing hardship and hunger in the country.
He said President Tinubu acknowledged the situation and assured them that measures were being taken to tackle these pressing issues.
