Retired General Leading Zamfara Community Guards Shot

Suspected terrorists shot the Director General of Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), General Lawal B. Muhammad (rtd), on Sunday during an attack in Kucheri village, Tsafe Local Government Area, Daily Trust reports.

The incident occurred when gunmen attacked motorists in the village, blocking the Funtua-Tsafe Road late in the evening. The terrorists reportedly shot General Muhammad during the ambush and abducted several passengers.

A source from the Zamfara State Ministry of Internal Security confirmed that the injured CPG DG was receiving treatment at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau. “It is confirmed that the bandits shot the DG of Community Protection Guards, and he is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” the source said.

This attack follows a similar incident days earlier, where bandits killed at least eight CPG personnel and a commercial driver in Tsafe.

Eyewitnesses said the terrorists ambushed the CPG members and engaged soldiers in a gun battle at Unguwar Chida village, which also led to the death of a commercial driver and injuries to three soldiers.

General Muhammad, reacting to the recent attacks, said, “After I realized that bandits have made operations in Tsafe a routine exercise, I deployed 105 CPG personnel to the local government and stationed them at this particular point to protect travelers. Unfortunately, the bandits ambushed my boys on Sunday. I suspect the bandits slept there because my boys used to arrive early in the morning. As soon as they stepped out of their patrol van, the bandits opened fire, killing some of them on the spot. It is quite unfortunate.”

Efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Spokesman, Yezid Abubakar, for comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages.
