As part of its long-standing commitment to empowering young girls and women, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has announced that the center will provide training to members of the Women Online Vendors Association (WOVA), Kano State chapter, focusing on online safety and digital marketing to help them expand their businesses and earn a decent living.

Engr. Y. Z. Ya’u, the Executive Director of CITAD, made this announcement while receiving the leadership of WOVA in his office on Monday in Kano.

Engr. Y. Z. Ya’u mentioned that CITAD exposes many women and young girls to the various career opportunities available in the ICT sector, in addition to encouraging them to explore the vast possibilities in the ICT field.

He added that the upcoming training will offer women who aspire to grow their careers in the ICT sector the opportunity to utilize relevant digital skills to enhance their products for greater visibility.

He said “The training will create a pipeline of highly skilled online female entrepreneurs who can contribute to innovation and growth in Nigeria’s economy,”.

“CITAD wants women to understand that something as small as their Android phones can go a long way in helping them drive online traffic, achieve business growth, and undergo transformation,” said Engr. Y. Z. Ya’u.

While speaking, the WOVA chairperson, Hajiya Ayat Uba Adamu, who was represented by her deputy, Hajiya Zuwaira Yarima, stated that the primary objective of the advocacy visit was to establish a meaningful connection between WOVA and CITAD, as well as to seek collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening the thriving landscape of online businesses, particularly among women and young girls in northern Nigeria.

She emphasized that with women’s participation in online businesses, it becomes essential to empower and encourage them to actively participate in online entrepreneurship.

Mrs. Zuwaira also highlighted that women, especially in the northern region, are often left behind in terms of managing new technologies, either due to intimidation preventing acceptance or lack of proficiency in handling them.

“Technology offers numerous benefits, and in developing nations, women constitute a large proportion of those lacking skills in the digital world. This training can make women active participants in the realm of ICT and digital marketing.”
