The Kano State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of school fee increments at all private primary and secondary schools. The government has also put the sale of books and uniforms by private schools on hold.
Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Private Schools, stated this in an exclusive interview with SOLACEBASE on Sunday.
Baba Umar mentioned that the state has begun issuing application forms for the registration of private schools in the state since the government announced the withdrawal of the school’s certificate of operations on Saturday.
He emphasized, “The state government has commenced the issuance of application forms for the registration of private school operations in the state. The registration period will end on Friday, August 18th, 2023.”
“The purpose of this new registration is to ensure an accurate database for government policy and monitoring to sanitize the sector,” he added.
“Everything we are implementing for private school operations in the state is in accordance with the law established in May 2014.”
“Parents should report any school that is asking them for a fee increment, as that has been suspended for now,” Baba Umar further stated.
“No school will be allowed to unilaterally increase school fees again.”
He noted that the state government would also ensure that parents pay school fees for their children at the same time, as the operators are not charity organizations.
The special adviser added that private school operators who fail to apply before the application deadline would face sanctions if they continue to operate.
