No fewer than 100 repentant criminals have surrendered to the police with their weapons in Kano state within the past three months.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, disclosed this while briefing the newsmen at the Press Centre in Kano on Monday.
He said the criminals surrendered within the 100 days he assumed duty as the Commissioner of Police of the state.
He mentioned that most of the unrepentant criminals had left the state, while the repentant ones were now helping the police track others down to their hideouts.
“We launched a manhunt for three notorious criminals and placed a N100,000 bounty on each of their heads. One of the three criminals has voluntarily surrendered himself to the police headquarters.
“We have placed him under observation, and he is now working with the police to track down other criminals. We are still working on apprehending the remaining two. We will certainly arrest them and parade them before the public.”
He revealed that the command had launched a significant manhunt for six individuals identified by the police as part of the protesting crowd that caused public disturbances during the commissioning of Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, near the Emir’s palace on Sunday.
The protesters were said to have organized themselves in a disruptive manner, chanting provocative slogans against the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who also attended the event.
They chanted slogans such as “new governor, new Emir,” insisting that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf should “remove” the Emir and install a new one, since it is a new government in power.
Gumel stated that the police used technology to identify those involved, adding that more individuals would be tracked down, including their sponsors.
“Those groups of people were not invited to the event. They were intruders who came on their own, and they must have been sponsored by somebody or a group of persons.
“Six persons have been identified. We used technology to track them down. We are still analyzing the video footage, and we are making efforts to apprehend all those involved. We are also making efforts to locate the sponsors.
“The traditional institution is a respectable institution. Anyone who interferes with the traditional institution is a saboteur and an enemy of the state,” Gumel said.
