A pro democracy group, Partnership for Issues-Based Campaign in Nigeria (PICaN) has called for total overhauling of the Nigerian judiciary following what it called a mess by the Kano governorship Tribunal Judgement recently.
Worried by the recent tribunal judgements on pre-election and election matters in Kano and other stated which continues to expose INEC’s failure in her constitutional duty and responsibility as a regulatory institution on political parties the group called for the implementation of Justice Muhammad Uwais report.
“In salvaging the electoral process, we hereby call for the full adoption of the Justice Muhammad Uwais Electoral Reform Committee report, which recommended pathways that if implemented will improve the entire electoral system with emphasis on strengthening the legal frameworks and enhancing the independence of the electoral body”.
“Of specific concern is the need to close the gaps by amending Section 64 (4),(5)of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) on the transmission of the data of accreditation recorded, votes and results of the election recorded”.
“Therefore, there is an urgent need for an amendment to mandate INEC to transmit results electronically from polling units in a timely manner that improves the credibility of the polls and collation of results”.
The National president, PICaN, Comrade Bako Abdul Usman said on Wednesday in Kaduna Said the law is supposed to be the last hope of every common man and that is why all eyes are on the judiciary to play a key role in sustaining this hard earned democracy and should not be perceived as the institution undermining the will of the people.
That security agencies who have arrested citizens in Kano State should understand that protest is another way citizen’s express their heartfelt expectations and desires, so the agencies should prioritise investigating those wrongly arrested to be set free.
Adding that it has become important now, more than ever, to have post election petitions and litigations determined before a candidate is sworn into office.
while calling on all aggrieved parties to not allow their supporters to take laws into their hands.
