The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) says it is taking steps to enhance plastic waste management in Kano state with the aim of ensuring cleaner environment and generating job opportunities for the youth.
Sharing this initiative in an interview with China Radio International (CRI) Hausa during his two-week visit to Beijing, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, the Project Coordinator for Kano ACReSAL, said the trip involved specialized training sessions on plastic waste management techniques.
He added that the tour was organized by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with Suzhou University of Science and Technology.
A medical doctor who transitioned into an environmentalist, Dr. Hashim expressed his commitment to implementing the knowledge gained during the training, collaborating with REMASAB, the agency responsible for waste management in Kano.
He emphasized the pressing need to address the environmental impact of plastics, particularly in terms of recycling and the production of compost manure from decomposed waste.
Dr. Hashim stressed the importance of waste sorting and recycling, acknowledging their potential economic benefits.
He pledged to raise awareness about waste sorting and seek government support to initiate policies that would attract investment in waste-to-wealth initiatives.
Dr. Hashim said his experiences in China have fortified his vision for a cleaner and greener Kano State, especially in light of the environmental challenges facing the region, such as climate change, drylands, erosion, flooding, and land degradation.
He revealed that his mission is to effect a positive environmental change in the community.
He emphasize that this initiative aligns with the goals of Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s administration, which focuses on a clean environment and job creation.
