Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has issued a stern warning to anyone caught diverting food items meant for vulnerable residents during Ramadan.
The Governor stated that those found guilty, including security personnel, could face life imprisonment.
Governor Yusuf made the remarks during the launch of the state’s fourth Ramadan palliative distribution program, which aims to distribute food items to 250,000 households across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
“Let me make this very clear,” Governor Yusuf declared. “Anyone, individual or group, found diverting even a single bag of rice will be dealt with decisively according to the law. This is a warning to those who think they can steal from the most vulnerable. We will not tolerate any sabotage of this distribution exercise.”
The Governor emphasized the importance of transparency and urged the Local Government Palliative Distribution Compliance Committees to strictly adhere to the distribution guidelines.
He highlighted the program’s goal of alleviating hardship during Ramadan, a time when food insecurity can worsen for many families.
“We understand the unique challenges of Ramadan, especially for the less fortunate,” Governor Yusuf said. “These palliatives will significantly help address food shortages during the fasting period.”
The program targets 224,440 households, with equal distribution between males and females across 11,222 polling units. The distribution kicks off in the Kano South Senatorial district, encompassing 16 local government areas and receiving over 31,000 bags of rice.
