In a major victory against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State arrested 319 suspects and seized a staggering 4.7 tonnes of illicit drugs between January and March 2024.
“We are relentlessly pursuing our goal of creating a drug-free Kano and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” declared NDLEA Kano Commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, in a recent interview.
Commander Ahmad elaborated on the arrests, stating, “The suspects comprised of 14 females and 305 males.”
The NDLEA operation resulted in the confiscation of a massive amount of narcotics. “The total drugs seized surpass four tonnes,” revealed Commander Ahmad, “including 2.3kg of marijuana and 2.4kg of psychotropic substances.”
Significantly, the agency also seized a large quantity of prescription drugs misused illegally, “over five million pills of tramadol and 1.9kg of other dangerous substances.”
The NDLEA’s efforts extend beyond arrests and seizures. “We secured 33 convictions of individuals involved in drug trafficking and related offenses within the last quarter,” said Ahmad.
“Additionally, we facilitated the rehabilitation of 26 drug addicts, processed 38 visa clearances, and conducted 30 drug integrity tests for both individuals and members of the Kano Emirate Council.”
With the upcoming Eid-il-Fitr celebrations approaching, Commander Ahmad reassured Kano residents.
“The NDLEA is committed to maintaining law and order during this festive period and preventing the spread of illicit drugs within our communities,” he affirmed.
“We will continue to dismantle drug trafficking networks, apprehend perpetrators, and curb the spread of drug abuse in Kano.”
