Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has released 222 inmates from correctional facilities across the state in a bid to bring them joy during the holy month of Ramadan and allow them to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with their families.
“The decision was part of the compassionate move to bring happiness to the inmates,” said Ibrahim Kaula-Mohammed, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, in a statement released on Tuesday.
The released inmates were those unable to pay fines imposed by courts.
“This initiative would go a long way in decongesting the custodial centers,” said Fadila Muhammad-Dikko, Katsina State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, according to Kaula-Mohammed. “The governor’s gesture provides relief to those incarcerated for minor and non-capital offenses.”
Muhammad-Dikko elaborated that a “thorough verification and recommendations” process ensured the beneficiaries qualified for this intervention.
The Chief Press Secretary reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the well-being of Katsina citizens.
