Kano state Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Sunday, launched the 2024 tree planting campaign by Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) in the state.
Speaking shortly before planting trees at the state Government House, Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of tree planting considering the climatic conditions, which are leading to unpredictable weather conditions.
He called on residents of the state to ensure that they plant trees in order to fight the ravaging climatic conditions.
While speaking, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, the Project Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative, revealed plans to plant over 10 million trees across Kano State over the next four years.
Dr. Hashim outlined a strategy to plant 2.5 million trees annually, commencing this year. Collaborating with Civil Society Organizations and other agencies, the initiative aims to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to afforestation, covering diverse geographical areas, including major metropolitan roads.
He advised Kano residents to ensure they plant a tree in their neighborhood or community to keep life and fresh air in circulation.
According to him, trees greatly benefit the people living around them by having a positive impact on their mental health and wellbeing, reducing stress, and encouraging outdoor exercise.
