In a democratic society, the absence of a competent Commissioner of Information can pose significant challenges for the government. Without effective communication channels and transparency, citizens may feel disconnected and uninformed, leading to distrust in the government’s actions and decisions. Scholars argue that without a capable Commissioner of Information, the government may struggle to disseminate crucial information, leading to misinformation, rumours, and public unrest.
In the context of the present Kano state administration, the lack of a strong Commissioner of Information could exacerbate existing challenges. Kano, being one of Nigeria’s most populous states, requires clear and transparent communication to address various socio-economic issues effectively. Without a proactive information commissioner, the government may struggle to address public concerns, manage crises, and maintain accountability, ultimately undermining the administration’s efforts to foster trust and credibility among its citizens.
Baba Halilu Dantiye, a seasoned journalist with an impressive educational background and extensive experience in media and public relations, seemed poised to make a significant impact as Kano state’s Commissioner of Information. However, since assuming office on June 26, 2023, his presence and influence within the government have noticeably dwindled, raising questions about his effectiveness in the role. With a résumé that includes stints as General Secretary and later President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, as well as various media and public relations positions within both government and the private sector, Dantiye appeared well-equipped to serve as the engine room for facilitating government information management in Kano state.
However, reports suggest that Dantiye’s tenure has been marred by political interests and side-lining by Governor Abba Yusuf, resulting in a significant decrease in his visibility and engagement within the government. Despite his wealth of experience and qualifications, the public’s awareness of his role as Commissioner of Information has diminished, especially when compared to his predecessors. As the state information commissioner, there has been a limited number of releases and statements signed and issued to the press, unlike his predecessors who had hundreds of releases within a short period of time.
The decline in the visibility and effectiveness of Kano’s Information Commissioner is concerning for several reasons. Effective communication between the government and the public is essential for fostering trust, accountability, and citizen engagement. When key officials such as the Commissioner of Information are side-lined or rendered ineffective, it can erode public confidence in the government and hinder efforts to promote transparency and good governance. Furthermore, in an era where misinformation and disinformation proliferate, the role of the Commissioner of Information becomes even more critical, serving as a reliable source of accurate and timely information, countering false narratives, and ensuring that the public is well-informed about government policies and decisions.
The case of Baba Halilu Dantiye serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of empowering and supporting key government officials responsible for information dissemination and public relations. Without adequate resources, support, and political backing, even the most qualified individuals may struggle to fulfil their mandates effectively. As Kano state grapples with the challenges of governance and public communication, it is imperative that leaders prioritize the role of the Commissioner of Information and provide the necessary support to ensure their success. Only then can the government effectively engage with its citizens, build trust, and work towards achieving its goals in a transparent and accountable manner.
The Kano public deserves clear and consistent communication from their government. Is Baba Halilu Dantiye up to the task, or has he been relegated to a silent position? Only time will tell if the Information Commissioner will find his voice and fulfil the mandate entrusted to him.
